If the soil is dry when you put your index finger 1-2. However, a simple solution is to stick your finger into the soil. The container in which your plant is kept also plays a huge role. In cool climates, begonias are pruned in fall, mainly so that they can easily fit in an indoor location to safely overwinter. How often you water your Begonia plants will depend on the level of humidity, the temperature, the size of the plant, and the type of soil used for the plant. In warm climates, begonia plant pruning is usually done in spring. Rhizomatous and fibrous rooted begonias don’t die back but they are usually pruned annually to keep them full and blooming properly. Whether grown outdoors year-round in warm climates or as annuals in cold climates, tuberous begonias die back annually to store up energy in their tubers while they go through a dormant phase. Many rhizomatous begonias are specifically grown as houseplants for their dramatic foliage and tolerance of indirect sunlight. Rhizomatous begonias are usually easy to identify by their fleshy, horizontal stems or rhizomes which run along or just under the soil surface. In cool climates, they can be brought indoors and treated like houseplants through winter. This means that in warm tropical climates they can grow outdoors, and some even bloom year-round. The begonia foliage should be trimmed back, and the tubers can be dried and stored in a cool, dry location through winter, just as canna or dahlia bulbs are stored.įibrous rooted and rhizomatous begonias do not die back once a year like tuberous begonias. Many experts suggest you actually wait until the plant shows signs of being dry, such as drooping leaves, before you water them. When you take care of begonias, make sure that you only water them when they need to be watered. However, at this point, tuberous begonias will naturally begin to die back to the ground. Begonias grown indoors are especially susceptible to root rot and overwatering. In cool climates with frost and snow in winter, begonias need to be discarded or brought indoors to a sheltered location when temperatures begin to dip below 50 degrees F. In warm, frost-free climates, begonias can grow outdoors as perennials and certain types may even bloom all year. For instance, how and when to prune a begonia plant depends on your location, as well as which type of begonia you have. Pruning a begonia plant depends on different factors. Continue reading to learn how to prune begonias. Of course, overwintering begonia plants may require pruning. Many plant lovers have realized that instead of purchasing expensive begonia baskets each spring, they can overwinter them in greenhouses or as houseplants. This will be clearly obvious if you gently remove the plant from its pot. The dramatic foliage of certain begonias is especially popular for shade-loving hanging baskets. Since begonias like to be root bound, wait to repot until the container is filled with roots. In cooler climates, they are grown as annual plants. In colder regions with long winters, wax begonias and tuberous begonias tend to do best outdoors during the warmth of the. For example, rex begonias and many species types grow well as houseplants throughout the year with little care. Native to the Caribbean Islands and other tropical locations, begonias are hardy in areas with frost free winters. Some types of begonias are better suited to indoor environments than others.

He’s dabbled with more traditional ASMR triggers to help people sleep, to more weird ASMR roleplay like playing an ashes dealer in Marvel’s The Infinity Wars saga. Since there’s an unlimited number of ASMR triggers, Paul has a ton of space for experimentation. Though Paul now primarily posts ASMR-related content, he still injects his creativity into every video he posts. While Paul intended for the channel to be his place for random musings and creative ideas, it became one of the biggest ASMR channels on the platform. Scratching the creative itch Image courtesy: Ephemeral Rift I just fell into it and it became routine and it’s something I guess I’m good at,” he says. After some practice, he found a formula that worked for him and his audience. Paul still didn’t know much about video production at that point, but that didn’t stop him from jumping head-first into creating ASMR videos. Paul was inspired to start making ASMR videos, “I was like: Okay, I’ll give it a try.” This decision led Ephemeral Rift to what it is today. The landscape for this type of content was wide open. With so little content on ASMR available, Paul found a niche that interested him and was virtually unexplored on YouTube. “I found out that there was a small number of people doing ASMR videos back in 2012,” Paul says. Paul was intrigued by the potential for creative experimentation. The concept of ASMR was new and, even today, it’s still a scientific mystery. He just didn’t know there was a name for the sensation. He realized he’d been experiencing the ASMR “tingles” his whole life. They asked about my video, asked if they could use it for a particular project and they mentioned ASMR.” Curious about what ASMR is, Paul researched the term. “I had created a certain video,” he recalls, “Someone saw it that was familiar with ASMR. Paul hadn’t heard of ASMR until he was approached by a viewer. Finding his niche in ASMR Image courtesy: Ephemeral Rift It became a great creative outlet for Paul, and he continued to post videos for six months until he came across ASMR. He found he enjoyed posting videos to YouTube and stuck with it. “I thought it was just a dumping ground for all kinds of crazy videos and random stuff,” Paul says. He simply wanted to create videos as a way to express himself creatively. He didn’t make a business plan, post a schedule or design a brand. Paul didn’t see YouTube as a career path for him either. He decided to give YouTube a try: “I just opened a channel in 2011.” Eventually, he found his niche.Īt the time, the concept of making YouTube a full-time career was unheard of. And drawing … but that was never my thing.” “I tried to teach myself how to play guitar … but music was never my thing. He tried several creative outlets over the years, all seemingly promising at the time, but ultimately came up short. Eventually, he decided that he needed to find balance, so he began exploring his options. There were no opportunities for him to explore this creative side. “I had a desire to do something creative throughout my life, I just never knew what, you know?” he tells us. Before Paul started Ephemeral Rift, he found himself in one of those desk jobs. While desk jobs can be great for some, they can often leave creative itches unscratched. We also discuss his philosophy on YouTube’s algorithm and why he chooses not to engage with YouTube’s numbers game. We had the opportunity to speak with Paul about his creative process, how he comes up with new ideas for Ephemeral Rift and what sets his channel apart from other ASMRists. During the tests, the robot operated with an average contact pressure of roughly. Sinatra says that a contact pressure (the force created by two objects pushing away from each other) of 1 kilopascals (kPa) or more could potentially squish the fragile jellies. In order to keep the animals safe during capture, the robot needs to apply just the right amount of pressure. But the jellies easily escaped the grasp of the four-appendage device, so the scientists added two additional fingers on the top and bottom of the palm to ensure a firmer grasp. The scientists then ventured over to the New England Aquarium in Boston to test a four-fingered version of the device on three common species of jellyfish: the moon jelly, the blue blubber jelly, and the spotted jelly. Sinatra says it was able to perform 100 grabs before the fingers wore out. The team also tracked the bot’s durability. Speed was an important factor, too: If the arms closed too quickly, they could poke the jelly, but if they closed too slowly, it could slide out and float away. To gauge the bot's success, the researchers wanted to see whether the fingers could withstand the forces of the squirming animals. Sinatra and her colleagues first practiced using the device on fake jellyfish in their lab. An air channel inside each finger can be pressurized, forcing the appendages to curl inward, and the soft exterior silicone coating of each finger is laced with a web of nanofibers that help direct which way they move. Sinatra's robot has six finger-like appendages that stretch out and delicately close around the fish. Crab apple trees need at least six hours of sunlight each day in order to thrive. This gives the tree plenty of time to get established before the hot summer weather arrives.Ĭhoose a spot in your garden that gets plenty of sun. The best time to plant a crab apple tree is in late winter or early spring. If you’re thinking of planting a crab apple tree, read on for everything you need to know. They are incredibly beautiful, with their delicate white blossoms and glossy green leaves, not to mention the colourful fruit they produce in autumn. The wood of the Crabappletree can be used for making furniture and musical instruments. How to plant a Crab apple treeĬrab apple trees are a popular choice for many gardens, and it’s easy to see why. The fruit of the Crabapple tree is used to make jelly, jam, wine, and cider. The lifespan of a Crabapple tree is around 50 years, but some trees have been known to live for over 100 years! It can reach a height of 15-20 m and a width of 6-8 m at maturity. The Crab apple tree grows best in full sun and prefers well-drained soils. The Crab apple tree is also sometimes called the “Wild Apple” or the “Sour Apple”. The name “Crabapple” is thought to be derived from the Old English word “crabba”, which means “sour”. The Crab apple tree was first described by American botanist John Bartram in 1785. The fruit of the Crab apple tree is a small, red or yellow fruit that is about 1-2 cm in diameter. The leaves of the Crab apple tree are simple and alternate, and the flowers are white or pinkish-white in colour. The scientific name for the Crab apple tree is Malus pumila. The Crab apple tree is a deciduous tree that is native to North America. Once established, the Crab apple tree will require little pruning or watering. It is a popular choice for gardeners as it is relatively low maintenance and easy to care for. The Crab apple tree is native to Europe and Asia but can now be found growing all over the world. The fruits are not edible for humans but can be used to make jams, jellies and cider. They typically bloom in spring, with white or pink flowers that are followed by small, red or yellow fruits in autumn. The Crab apple tree is also known for its tolerance of poor soil conditions, making it a good choice for areas where other trees might struggle to grow.Ĭrab apple trees are deciduous, meaning they lose their leaves in winter. The Crab apple tree is a popular choice for gardens and orchards due to its attractive flowers and fruit. It prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade, and prefers moist well-drained soils but is tolerant of dry conditions once established. In North America, it is found from Newfoundland to Alberta and British Columbia south to Louisiana and California. The crabapple tree is native to Europe, Asia, and North America. Reaction of oganesson with basesĪs no atoms of oganesson have ever been made, its reactivity with bases is unknown. The atom consist of a small but massive nucleus surrounded by a cloud of rapidly moving electrons. One would predict its behaviour to be similar to that of radon (immediately above oganesson in the periodic table) and xenon (two places above). Oganesson is a chemical element with atomic number 118 which means there are 118 protons and 118 electrons in the atomic structure. Reaction of oganesson with acidsĪs no atoms of oganesson have ever been made, its reactivity with acids is unknown. Reaction of oganesson with the halogensĪs no atoms of oganesson have ever been made, its reactivity with the halogens is unknown. It would probably dissolve to some extent in water at 20☌ (293 K). However, based upon the behaviour of radon (immediately above oganesson in the periodic table), one would predict that it does not react with water. Reaction of oganesson with waterĪs no atoms of oganesson have ever been made, its reactivity with water is unknown. However, based upon the behaviour of radon (immediately above oganesson in the periodic table), one would predict that it does not react with air. Although the element is positioned in the noble gas column (group 18) of the periodic table, theorists believe that it probably is neither a gas nor “noble”-that is, unreactive. As no atoms of oganesson have ever been made, its reactivity with air is unknown. Oganesson-294’s extremely short half-life precludes measurements of its physical and chemical properties. Computer modeling shows that more stable isotopes of oganesson may have atomic masses as high as 313. In 2011, researchers at the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research (Darmstadt, Germany) reported the possible discovery of 295Og, but this finding has not been confirmed. At that time, Oganessian and colleagues reported an 294Og half-life of 0.69 ms. In 2015, the Joint Working Party of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry and the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics recognized the discovery of oganesson. Additional experiments to confirm the existence of 249Og continued for the next decade. The nuclear reaction was later established to be 249Cf + 48Ca → 294Og + 3n, where n stands for neutron. They bombarded atoms of californium-249 with calcium-48 atoms to produce a few nuclei with atomic mass 294. The team’s first indication that it had produced element 118 came in 2002. The team consists of scientists at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna, Russia) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (CA). Oganesson is named after Russian nuclear physicist Yuri Oganessian, a leader of the Russian–American team that created most of the elements with atomic numbers >110. This produced oganesson-294, an isotope with a half-life of about 0.89 milliseconds (0.00089 seconds), and three free neutrons. This composition has not been confirmed experimentally. This is something of a “magic” number because it completes the seventh row of the periodic table of elements. To date, the highest atomic number element to be discovered or synthesized is oganesson (symbol Og), with atomic number 118. We take “last element” to mean the element with the highest atomic number. Even though this would be an atom and not a molecule, we thought it would be of interest to our readers. Last month, a junior high school student in New Jersey suggested that we feature “a known isotope of the last element of the periodic table”. (Caxton) In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight Reynard uses various tricks on the hunters as well. When one trick fails him he tries another such as back tracking, looping and hiding, hoping one will finally fool the hunters. (Borroff, 55) In the end, it is not Lord Bertilak who kills Reynard, as is noble, but rather the hounds rip out his throat, bringing the hunt to an unsporting close. This can be applied to Lady Bertilak who when trying to seduce Sir Gawain, she gives up on physical temptation and tries offering him gifts instead, hoping to appeal to another side of him that may give in. She offers him a priceless golden ring that might appeal to his greed, but Sir Gawain refuses. Then she tries to offer him the green girdle, appealing to his sense of self preservation. This succeeds, and Sir Gawain’s pure character is finally corrupted by Lady Bertilak’s tricks when seduction fails. The fox, nicknamed Reynard after the French trickster and folk hero, is the third animal hunted in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. It is established through adjectives used to describe the fox that this particular animal is regarded as “a thief,” “wily,” and “cunning.” (Borroff, 55) One representation of the fox is not mentioned though, the seducer. In the English language, a seductive and often untrustworthy woman is described as ‘foxy’ or a vixen. (Tattoo Designs and Symbols) This interestingly parallels Lady Bertilak, who enters Sir Gawain’s chamber dressed to seduce. “Her fair face and her fair throat freely displayed Her bosom all but bare, and her back as well.” (Borroff 56) While the deer and the boar, noble prey, were being hunted, Lady Bertilak is much less brazen. Sir Gawain also mentions that women seduce men from their noble goals, much like how Reynard kept the hunters occupied all day while they could have hunted nobler and more worthy prey such as deer and boars. In this way, the presence of a fox, the wicked seducer, gives insight into Lady Bertilak, and even Morgan Le Fay’s intentions to sway men through seduction.įoxes are also known throughout literature as tricksters, particularly in the French tales of Reynard the Fox. He joked in class about how no minor character was off limits and jokingly said to the class, "You can even write about the fox.what's his name." I nearly jumped out of my seat and squealed, "Dude!! I'm writting about the fox!!"Īn animal that is hunted, killed and skinned may not seem like the most important thing in a story about a knight and his vow. However, the hunting of animals, how they reacted, how they were killed, the quality of their skins and their symbolism has great importance in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. We gain insight into how the human characters think and how they act through the animals. The fox’s presence reinforces the characters’ more devious thoughts and feelings while resonating the themes of seduction, sin and treachery the prose. We were talking about how it was silly that the Lady (Lord Bertilak's wife) didn't get a name, but the fox did. I got the bunny to write this from my professor actually. Having foxes on the brain *cough*Gin*cough* I wrote about the fox, nicknamed Reynard after the French folk hero, from the Romantic poem, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. This essay topic was to write about a minor character in one of the pieces studied. A little essay I wrote in my first year of University for my English course called "Epic to Film." In this course we studied forms of narative from The Odyssey to The Dark Knight. |
